DIEP BREAST RECONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE - Sunday, January 18, 2009 7:39 AM
HELLO EVERYONE,

I AM GETTING READY TO HAVE A DIEP PROCEDURE AT JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL. I HAD BREAST CANCER 11 YEARS AGO AND HAD A RIGHT MASTECTOMY. I WASN'T ABLE TO HAVE THE RECON DONE RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE I ALSO HAD CERVICAL CANCER AND HAD TO HAVE A TOTAL HYSTERECTOMY DONE A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE SURGERY. MY QUESTION IS:
I UNDERSTAND THAT WITH THE DIEP PROCEDURE YOU ALSO GET A TUMMY TUCK IN THE PROCESS. I AM 80 POUNDS OVERWEIGHT AND I HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF FAT HANGING FROM MY BELLY (YEAH...I KNOW...UGH!). WILL THIS PROCEDURE TAKE AWAY ALL THE FAT AND GIVE ME A NICE FIRM TUMMY? I HEARD THAT THE TUMMY TUCK DOESN'T LAST. PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS.
THANKS AND HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!

Hello Dezum!

Welcome to the forums!

The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) gives the "effect" of a tummy tuck because excess tissue is removed from the abdomen to reconstruct the breast. However, without accompanying liposuction, you will probably not have the "flat tummy" you're seeking.

I would have to agree. I think you will be happy with the results, but I would not expect to wake up with a completely flat stomach. Good luck with your surgery. let us know how it turns out. Oh, and as far as a tummy tuck lasting, that all depends on your life style following the procedure. If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise, you should have long lasting results. Good luck

I had the DIEP procedure. When I had surgery I was overweight. I woke up to a very flat stomach and so far i sill have it. Its only been a year. My problem now is my hip area. Without the lipo my hips look life i have flaps. So yes you can have a flat stomach but if you can get lipo too. My doctor wants to charge me to fix that but i feel that it should be covered and part of the reconstruction.
