breast reconstruction-constant pain - Sunday, October 19, 2008 1:30 PM
I was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer 4/06.Mastectomy with expander 5/15/06, after chemo and radiation had implant-and lift on other side for semetry 2/07. Besides the fact that the "new breast" looks terrible(stitches throuh the middle of the breast, half the size of other breast, and up entirly too high on the chest wall)My major concern is terrible pain.It actually hurts too breath, I have been to the origional plastic surgeon, who says it is perfect and prescribes vicodin for pain. I can not continue in a blur of pain killers and constant pain. I have seen 2 other plastic surgeons who say it should get better, and they will not touch another surgeons work. Please advise what i can do to eleviate the pain.At this point I dont care how it looks, i just need to be able to function, and get back to living a life. I am 41 years old. please give any help you may have.thank you,Gina

I've never had breast implants, so I couldn't say for certain, but that really doesn't seem right, that you'd be in considerable pain well over a year after the procedure. According to this page: http://www.plasticsurgery.com/breast-reconstruction/info.aspx, it would seem like scarring is normal, but treatable. I would return to the original surgeon and consult the appropriate surgicl/medical board if he/she refuses to treat you to your satisfaction and/or dismisses your condition as normal. Whoever the surgeon is, sounds like they're trying to cover a mistake. I wish you good luck, as it would seem you're in a very undesireable situation.

I think that after a year you should not be feeling so much discomfort that you are unable to breath. A condition called capsular contracture is a common side effect following breast augmentation. Has this been mentioned to you? I would also ask your plastic surgeon for an ultrasound of the breast to be sure that this is not the problem. I would keep consulting with other plastic surgeons for a revision. you should not be living in this pain and I would hope that you could get better results. Good luck to you. Don't give up! Your situation is not normal, don't let anyone tell you that the pain is normal or will get better. Its been over a year, there should be no pain.
