Alternatives to Implants
-
Wednesday, November 08, 2006 10:51 AM
I am not open to implants but I would be interested in finding out if there is such a procedure as fat transfer. I was under the impression that fat tissue can be moved to the breast area. I nursed 3 children and would like to get my breasts back to their original state without implants.

Fat transfer or "grafting" was explored in the past as an option for breast augmentation. The procedure was unsuccessful due to the body’s ability to alter the adipose (or fat) tissue. If weight loss occurred, the shape of the breast would again change. If you are unhappy with your breasts because of breast feeding, you may just want to consider a lift. With a lift, the nipple is re-positioned and excess skin can be removed, this alone will give the breast a better look, but will not enhance the size.

You could go in for an autologous breast implant. These are usually done for women who’ve had a mastectomy and don’t want to use implants. The technique uses tissue from other areas, like the tummy, thighs or butt, to reconstruct a breast. I had a friend who had double mastectomies for breast cancer and her surgeon created autologous implants with fat and skin from her tummy. The technique they used is known as DEIP flap reconstruction. It’s more complicated than augmentation using implants because the surgeon has to create a blood supply for the transplanted tissues, but my friend’s breasts look quite natural after surgery, despite the mastectomy scars.

I would still be cautious with using transplanted tissue to create larger breasts. The "fat" or adipose tissue can change in size with changes in weight and you may loose your desired look
