when to stop smoking
-
Monday, October 09, 2006 10:23 AM
I've been told by one Dr. to quit smoking 6 months before a tummy tuck and breast lift. However, a different surgeon recommends 3 months. I've also read things on-line that say a few weeks. Why such a big difference between Dr.'s? Is 3 months really good enough? Why the extreme of 6 months?

I've heard that two weeks before and after is the minimum...maybe the first doctor said so long just to be on the safe side...I think the longer you stop before surgery, the better chance of ridding traces of nicotine out of your system...but don't quote me on that!

The physician that recommended you stop smoking 6 months prior to having a procedure done, was acting in your best interest. Smoking cessation improves the way in which you circulatory system functions. If you stop smoking 6 months prior to surgery, and 6 months post op, you will be a lot better off: You will be at lower risk for complications from anesthesia, you will handle the procedure itself better, and you will heal much nicerr because your veins and arteries will be able to profuse your skin more adequately. It will make your overall experience much more fulfilling, and less risky. You will be much happier with the outcome.
