Silicon filled breast implants make a comeback? - Friday, January 30, 2004 8:33 PM
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a clinical trial of new silicone filled breast implant. The neimplants, which have been marketed in Europe since 1993, are filled with a unique, cohesive silicone gel that is designed to prevent leakage of the gel. Silicone breast implants have been used since the early 1960s for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction, but have recently been replaced by saline filled breast implants due to safety concerns of silicone leakage. The new cohesive gel may lead to the resurgence of silicone filled implants.

Can you post the link to where you located the information about the "neimplants"? I looked at the FDA's page on breast implants and didn't see the information you mentioned. Thanks, Suzanne

I guess you should include that in researching a doctor. If you contact a doctor just ask them if they have experience working with gel implants. I'm not sure if "Gummies" are the same as the gel implants but they are available in Europe and Brazil and are being studied in the US. "The ‘gummy bear’ implants have the positive attributes of the silicone gel, but lack the concerns of gel migration,” says Stevens, who is one of 15 U.S. doctors participating in a study of Silimed cohesive gel implants." Source: Seeking Better Breast Implants They don't list the other fourteen doctors.

Any plastic surgeon can use Silicon filled breast implants for correction a deformity. The patient will be included in a review program and need to sign additional release paper work.

From my understanding Silicon filled breast implants can not be used for breast enhancement on the correction of a deformity.

I guess this is no big deal now since the FDA a approved the use of Silicon implants again. Looks like both of the US manufacture got the approvals ,late 2006, to produce silicon implants.
Does anyone know if there is a big difference between the Mentor MemoryGel and the Silicone filled implants made by Allergan?

Thereis a lot of info at: http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/breastimplants/siliconegel.html

There is no difference between the Mentor and Allergan silicone gel-filled implants. Mentor's Memory Gel and Allergan's Inamed Silicone-Filled Breast Implants are just their brand names. Both companies' implants were tested the same way and both were deemed equally safe.
