tummy tuck and sickle cell anemia - Wednesday, February 04, 2009 10:36 PM
I recently spoke to a plastic surgeon who requires me to have a blood test to determine whether or not I have the sickle trait because he says that it well affect my surgery healing as well as operation procedure. Has anyone else ever heard of this. In all the years that I have been looking into having a tummy (and have had a few consultations as well) I have never heard of this before he brought it up. Any thoughts?

JustMyHair,

Welcome to the forums!

This is actually quite common with doctors who specialize in various procedures that are not limited to Plastic Surgery. I would say that if a doctor DOES NOT want you to have blood tests before something like this, I would be more cautious of them. :)

All The Best,
Audrey

You must have risk factors for sickle cell anemia. I think its wonderful that your surgeon is being so thorough. Your surgeon makes no profit off of this lab, he is looking out for your best interest.
Let me know if you have any more questions
