Rib removal?
-
Friday, May 20, 2011 11:17 PM
I would like to get a rib removed, for a smaller waist. I was wondering roughly how much this costs? If possible in AU$. I was also wondering if this procedure causes any long term problems? Thanks in advance :)

Hi Rives129. This is a good question. I contacted a board certified plastic surgeon in southern California who informed me that removal of the ribs alone does not change a person's waist size/circumference because the rib cage normally ends well above waist level. However, rib removal is an optional part of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). This particular surgeon does not perform a rib removal procedure by itself and in order to undergo a rib removal procedure the patient must be a candidate for an abdominoplasty. The floating ribs (rib #11 and #12) do not come all the way around to meet the breast bone in the front. Rib #12 is only on the back, while rib #11 comes to the side/front of the body. This particular surgeon only removes ribs #11 and #12 on the sides and front as he thinks this gives the best results. Please note that this operation is NOT reversible (the ribs will not grow back) and should not be treated lightly. Although an abdominoplasty may be performed in a plastic surgeon's office operating room, an abdominoplasty with rib removal should be done in the hospital with an overnight stay. The average cost for an abdominoplasty in southern California costs around $10,000-15,000. Adding a rib removal procedure to an abdominoplasty would cost an additional $3,000-5,000. There may also be additional expenses for anesthesia, operating room, hospital, or stays in aftercare facilities, etc. I do not know the cost for an abdominoplasty with rib removal in Australia. I hope this information is helpful for you. If you decide to undergo this procedure, we would love for you to share your experience with us here on the forum. Anna
