smoking question

I've been told by one Dr. to quit smoking 6 months before a tummy tuck and breast lift. However, a different surgeon recommends 3 months. Why such a big difference between Dr.'s? Also, some sites on the net just say you should quit a few weeks prior. So, which is it?

RE: smoking question

Jenandroy- The physician that recommended you stop smoking 6 months prior to having a procedure done was acting in your best interest. Smoking cessation improves the way in which your circulatory system functions and the way your body heals. If you stop smoking 6 months prior to surgery, and 6 months post op, you will be a lot better off. Your risk of complications from anesthesia will be much lower, you will handle the procedure better, and you will heal much faster and nicer because your veins and arteries will be able to profuse your skin more adequately. It will make your overall experience much more fulfilling. So, the longer you quit before your procedure, the better.
