question

Ask Stephanie--
I have Factor V Leiden disorder, a genetic blood-clotting disorder. Does this disqualify me from plastic surgery/put me into a high risk category? I am currently on blood thinners. Will i have to go off them for the procedure? (abdominoplasty)

RE: question

With this type of disorder, you are at high risk for DVT (deep venous thrombosis). DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolis or stroke. Both of which are life threatening conditions. Surgery is a risk factor in itself for DVT, so someone undergoing surgery with this disorder is at high risk. Other risk factors for DVT are smoking, and estrogen therapy. I would avoid putting yourself in a high risk position where it can be avoided. If you do opt to have a consultation make sure that your plastic surgeon is farmiliar with your condition. You would most likley need to stop your blood thinner therapy, such as coumadin, before undergoing any surgical procedure. I would definatly weigh the risks and benefits in this situation. Good luck to you.
