Stoma - Monday, January 19, 2009 12:36 PM
My SIL had a temporary iliostomy (sp) in 2001. She now has asymmetrical abdominal muscles as well as a very deep scar from her stoma. She survived her bout with colon cancer and is very fortunate to be alive. However, her cosmetic deformities are causing her issues with her self esteem etc. My question is...is this kind of surgery (to fix the abs and scarring) considered strictly cosmetic? I know that women who have breast cancer are able to get breast implants after mastectomies...is it not kind of the same? Please advise. Thank you very, very much!!!

Hello Teedubs!

Welcome to the forums!

Surgeries like this can SOMETIMES by covered by insurance depending upon which company it is and their policy and "necessary follow-up procedures." I would suggest contacting your sisters insurance company to find out if this type of procedure is covered. If not, visit this page for financing information: Plastic Surgery Financing
