facelift for the overweight - Monday, May 30, 2005 7:55 PM
I am 53 years old, five foot three and weigh 180 pounds. I am sechduled to have a facelift in less than three weeks. I'd like to know if I should postpone my surgery until I lose the 40 pounds I wish to lose. My doctor says that I can lose up to thirty pounds AFTER the face lift without losing the effects of the surgery, i.e., no sagging skin. I've lost twenty five pounds and kept the weight off over two years but as a result have a turkey neck thing going on that's driving me crazy! One last thing, I had my eyes done two years ago and the doctor told me that I had very tough skin, though my skin has few wrinkles for my age. It took twice as long to do my eyes than any one else he'd ever done. Is this something the new doctor should know? Thanks! Pam J.

First of all Iwould like to congratulate you on your weight loss thus far. If your goal is to loose 40 additional pounds, I would suggest giving yourself time to meet this goal. Set a time limit to loose the weight in a healthy manner. Having the face lift done after you have met your weight loss goals will ensure you that you are getting results that will stick with you! You won't have to worry about additional weight loss changing the results of your face lift.

As for your second question, it never hurts to mention previous medical experience during your surgical consultation!
