breast augmentation

Hi stephanie (hope i spelt that correctly)
I have decided to have BA and have opted for the tear drop (anatomical) shaped implants. I am starting to get very nervous deciding on a surgeon. for approximatly a year now i have looked through forums and read up on BA. I have ended up with a choice of four surgeons. But they all seem quite different, so it is hard to choose. The first had ten years experience placing the anatomical implants. Measured the width, depth, length of my bust and that enabled him to work out the cc of the implant, width, position..etc. He said as i had little breast tissue he would place the top of the implant under my muscle and the fuller part under only my breast tissue. I quired this but he said i had enough breast tissue at the bottom to cover. I had a really good feeling with this surgeon, he has excellent credentials and good reputaion, BUT

My worries:-
-the hospital is 3 hours from home.
-i would be a day patient, other hospitals you stay in over night.I would stay in hotel for couple of days post op
-the cost doesnt include further complications after 30 days of op. would have to pay surgeon fee, anaesthetic fee, theater fee again. Thankfully not the implant.

Another surgeon i saw has a good reputation, i know of a couple of people who have had BA with him and the results are good. The hospital is only a few meters from my house, very reputable hospital, over night stay in the hospital and although it is more expensive than the other place it includes a years cover incase of complications. unfortunatly i didnt get as good a feeling with this surgeon. Maybe i was being biased as i knew prior to seeing him that he didnt have as many qualifications..ect than the previous surgeon, but he also didnt measure my breast, he seemed to know by just looking at them what size, shap i would need.

Do you think the other surgeon was using a necessary technique to find the correct sized implants or do you think the second surgeon is experienced enough to not have to do the measuring. would you measure for anatomical implants.

Also the first surgeon said he never uses drains, if you do a job properly it isnt needed and drains can introduce infection, but the second surgeon said he may place them.

Anyway as you can tell i am very confused, the third surgeon although good i felt hadnt done many BA surgerys using anatomical implants so i ruled him out. have one more to go, if he says something different to the first two i think my head might explode hee hee :-) It doesnt help that i worked as an anaesthetist at a vets for years and know that surgeons come in all shapes and sizes, skills and abilities. Some you would be amazed by some you would be horrified by.

Sorry to take up so much of your time, but would you be able to advice me what the best procedure for gauging the size of anatomical implant needed is, and how best to place them ie under the muscle, over the muscle or half and half as the first surgeon stated. I am a 32 AA, although i know its not as simple as that.

Thank you for your help. angie x

RE: breast augmentation

First of all I think it's great that you have been doing your homework!! I always recommend that patients see multiple surgeons for consultations. I think the first surgeon sounded pretty good. Being far from home is the only issue that would be hard, but its not the end of the world. Did you tell the surgeon how far you are? If you are staying in a hotel for a couple of days I would not worry about it. Many people do not stay over night in the hospital following a BA. It's not necessary, and it would only add to the cost.

As far as measuring goes, its a good idea. if you look on Mentors web page (they manufacture implants) they discuss this method. It helps the surgeon determine how close or far apart your breasts will be following the augmentation (cleavage!) Look at before and after pictures! Also, you have to work with a surgeon who you are comfortable with!

As far as placement, I think behind the muscle is the best choice. It gives a more natural look, hides the shape of implant and rippling, and you can breast feed if you are planning on children in the future.

Let me know what you decide.
Stephanie
