breast reduction technique - Saturday, March 10, 2012 9:23 PM
HI, I wonder if anyone can shed some light for me.  I have been reading about different BR techniques for the past month, and the more I know the more questions I have.  I have just had a consultation with 2 doctors about which technique is best for me.  Of course, they both said a different one is best for me, so I am back to square one. I had also read that doctors will say the technique that is best for you is the one they are more familiar with performing.  If that's the case, how do you really know which technique is best for you?  One doctor said the inferior pedicle procedure is best, the other the superior pedicle.  Both are saying I will have 500cc removed and both are saying the inverted T suregery.  Should I be concerned with whether it is is inferior or superior?  Is one better than the other?

Also, they both say no bandages after the first night hospital stay, and one says I will have the stitches out after 2 weeks, the other after 1 week, and both say I don't need to have on anything while sleeping, after the first night in the hospital..

Does this sound accurate?
Thanks so much for any help.  I am 55, and have wanted to reduce my size since I was 14!

Hello,
Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammaplasty. Typically, this is performed using an anchor, or inverted-T type incision with an incision placed around the areola, down the middle of the breast to the breast crease, and lengthwise along the breast crease medially and laterally.

A technique was developed and introduced by several physicians including Lejour and Hall-Findlay which is known as a short-scar, or vertical reduction mammaplasty. The scar is shorter, in some cases 1/3, and the procedure has its benefits and drawbacks.

The technique is very useful for darker skin types and for patients who have a tendency to heal poorly or noticeably. Results are technique-dependent and vary considerably on the experience of the surgeon.

Dear BR55,

You are right in that many surgeons will recommend the technique they are particularly familiar with using. I would recommend you seek an additional consultation. Also, I highly recommend that the plastic surgeon you choose be board certified in plastic surgery and experienced in performing breast reduction surgeries. It is a very good idea to look at each doctor's before- and after-photos of the breast reduction surgeries they have performed. That will help you see the type of results that you may be able to expect.
