Six Steps to Clear Skin - Thursday, April 22, 2010 6:56 PM
Hiding your acne with heavy makeup, hair, or “popping” it will only increase your awareness of it and even lead to scarring. Yet there is a solution, and it can be brought under control with a few simple guidelines.
1.) Nourish-
The most important factor in healing any condition; including acne, is diet.  A balanced diet could help in giving your system the necessary tools to fight bumps and blemishes on the skin.  In addition, your complexion will become brighter, and more energy will suddenly be released.  Small choices can bring about major changes.  Eating fruits, vegetables, and more whole foods will help to vitalize the body and brain with vitamins and minerals while improving digestion with enzymes.  Also, drinking a sufficient amount of water ; about 8 glasses a day, will help to purify and clean toxins in the system.
2.) Cleanse-
Cleansing the skin is essential for attaining and maintaining a clearer complexion.  You don’t have to wash your face with harsh and stripping alcohols or gritty scrubs either.  There are many gentle and dermatologist recommended cleansers on the market such as Cetaphil, which may be a solution to removing the daily dirt and oil.  Exfoliating the skin two to three times a week with a safe exfoliating cleanser is also a great way to buff away dead skin cells and other impurities.  Yet, always keep in mind that overwashing the skin leads to irritation and in turn causes greater oil production for more skin problems.
3.) Protect-
Sun exposure can help the skin by providing doses of Vitamin D3, but these benefits are temporary.  Constant and major sun exposure will actually do the opposite of helping your skin by plugging the pores and comedones (whiteheads or blackheads), and create a comfortable breeding ground for more acne.  Thus, to avoid this problem; especially if you have already cleared your skin, you should use an SPF 15 or 30 sunscreen when outside.
4.)  Rest-
A good night sleep of 7-8 hours beginning around 10pm is a wonderful way of gaining a healthier complexion.  Healthy resting habits help in clearing acne by building a stronger immune system.  Also, if you do not receive adequate rest at the right time of night your skin will appear pale and dull; an indication of a weaker immune system, and thus you will be more prone to breakouts.
5.) Exercise-
Working out is a great way to increase blood flow through the body, achieve a higher heart rate, increase vitamin and mineral absorption from foods, increase the oxygen level in the bloodstream, detoxify the body, and improve overall function in both the body and brain.  On top of all these great benefits movement in the body also helps you to release energy, thus enabling you to relax and reduce stress.  As you will see in the next solution, stress reduction is crucial in attaining clear skin.
6.) Relax-
Tension and stress in the body has many detrimental effects.  Tension leads your adrenal glands to flood the bloodstream with a hormone known as Cortisol.  Cortisol has been the cause of many chronic conditions, but when hormone levels escalate then this ultimately causes acne flare ups and severe breakouts.  So, it is important to take time out everyday to just sit and relax, and let your mind unwind.  Meditation alone can be the best way to relax and let the body attain a higher level of peace and tranquility.  Clearer skin could be achieved through meditation since you are in the process of rejuvenation where you are releasing the body and mind of any pressures and anxieties that would otherwise take a toll on the immune system.
Evidently being acne free is not simply having a strict skin cleansing regimen.  Having clear skin and a glowing complexion includes adopting a system and lifelong routine that aims at all aspects of prevention and healthcare, one that will provide clear skin for years to come.

Cleansing the skin with the right kind of cleanser or soap, getting enough rest and sleep, as well as eating a healthy diet are the best ways to combat pimples/acne.

Moisturize and sunblock - these are the two essential things which I consider for taking good care of the skin. Our skin needs moisture to keep it healthy. Meanwhile, sun's UV rays are proven to be harmful to skin; hence, if one cannot really prevent himself/herself to "hide" from the sun, then it is wiser to always use sunblock instead.

We should also have to address skin problems that we encounter in our daily routine... some people will tend to be more exposed to the sun because of their job and others are more exposed to pollution.

Nourish your skin by eating a healthy and balanced diet. Most health care specialists agree that a healthy diet will benefit your skin. Cut down on caffeine, sugar and refined carbohydrates, all of which can activate the hormones that tell your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Add more fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, juices and other healthy treats to your daily diet, and you'll see in improvement in your skin.
Drink lots of water to maintain the skin's elasticity.
Plenty of water is essential to the health of your skin. One of the main activities of the body's self-healing system is to filter the blood, a job performed mostly by the kidneys, with help from the skin in the form of perspiration. This self-healing system removes the toxic wastes of metabolizing food and of other harmful substances that get into our bodies one way or another.
This purification system operates efficiently only if the volume of water flowing through it is sufficient to carry away the wastes. 6 to 8 glasses (64 fluid ounces) of water a day is the recommendation. To reach your quota, carry bottled water with you in your car, your purse, your briefcase--wherever you go.
Get the water habit, and your skin will thank you for it.
 Exercise regularly for good circulation.

I think avoiding the use of cosmetic products on skin is also necessary to keep the skin healthy, most of these products contain chemicals that are not good for normal skin but are advertised to be good for skin just like drinking water and eating fresh food is important natural cosmetic products if employed are good for skin as well.

Hi, I have through read your given guidlines and found it's very useful for those who really want to get rid on acne but I don't think these all steps can be followed easily. We will have to be active and very care about all the steps all the times.

Thank you!

Hello,

I strongly agree with the last tip "Relax". Lack of sleep can harm your skin freshness. Enxiety can spoiled up your skin moisture and make it  rough.

Skin is the largest organ of body . We have to take good care of it. Vitamins and Nutrients keeps it good and Healthy. You get vitamins and nutrients from vegetables and fruits. For that you have to use good quality of soap which adjustable to your skin. Wash your face 2-3 times in day. Use sun protection cream to protect from sun. Use good moisturizing cream in winter for body.

Re:Six Steps to Clear Skin - Monday, September 12, 2011 10:20 AM
Washing your face is important.  However, I would recommend you only wash your face 1 or 2 times a day.  The most important time to wash your face is in the evening before you go to bed to remove all make up, oil, dirt, and impurities.  Washing your face more than 2 times a day may cause dryness, irritation, sensitivity, and may also cause your acne to worsen.  Below is a simple skin care routine that shouldn't take more than 5 minutes:

MORNING:
Step 1:     Cleanser
Use a gentle, water soluble cleanser all over your face with a soft washcloth.  There are many good cleansers on the market.  Keep in mind that any cleanser is only on your face for a short time.  Any "extras" the cosmetic company adds to the cleanser (such as antioxidants or acne-treating ingredients) will be washed down the drain.  I agree with nicknite 86, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is an excellent cleanser, as is Olay Gentle Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin.

Step 2:     Toner
Use a gentle, water-based formula.  There are many on the market have beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants, skin-repairing substances, and cell-communicating ingredients (such as niacinamide).

Step 3:     Exfoliant
A facial scrub is too harsh for your skin.  Therefore, a chemical exfoliator is better.  AHA (alpha hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid) or BHA (beta hydroxy acid, also known as salicylic acid) are gentle on your skin.  AHA is preferred for sun-damaged and dry skin because it exfoliates the surface of the skin and also improves the skin's moisture content.  BHA is preferred for oily and acne-prone skin because exfoliates the surface of the skin as well as the inside the pores.  BHA also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Step 4:     Moisturizer with Sunscreen
The best defense against wrinkles is using an effective sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher every day (SPF 30 is better).

EVENING
Step 1:     Cleanser
Step 2:     Toner
Step 3:     Exfoliant
Step 4:     Moisturizer (without sunscreen)

For more information on skin care and cosmetic products, I recommend you go to Beautypedia.com. This is an excellent website from Paula Begoun that provides reliable, in-depth researched information on cosmetic products, excellent skin care advice, and thousands of skin-care and make up reviews.  It's a site I go to before purchasing any skin care or make up product.
