Folliculitis can be caused by several factors. Knowing the cause allows treatment to be more successful. Several bacteria can cause folliculitis. Other causes include occlusive clothing, perspiration, and rubbing of skin on skin, or skin on clothing. Folliculitis may also be caused by the use of topical/ oral steroids, and oils that are irritating (such as cocoa butter, cosmetics, etc).
Topical treatments are available for folliculitis due to bacterial infection and should be discussed with your family physician. If the condition persists with topical therapy, oral antibiotics may be prescribed for 4-8 weeks.
Discussing your condition with your physician will be most helpful. Determine if the condition that you have is indeed folliculitis. If topical/ oral therapy fails, laser treatments may be helpful. For more information on laser therapy click on the following link
